Upgrades Coming Soon

Upgrades to both the Pathways Database Publisher and the CD-ROM Publisher software are scheduled for release in early October. The new release will include a number of minor enhancements requested at the Users Group Meeting earlier this year.  It will also include the following major enhancements:

A direct interface from the Pathways software to the
user's email and web browser software. On any
Pathways screen that includes a data field for either
an email address or a URL address, the user will now
see 2 new Icons.  One Icon will start the user's email
software and address a new message to the address
shown on the data screen.  The other Icon will start
the user's web browser software and link to the URL
address shown on the data screen.  On any screen
containing more than one email or URL address,
the user will be given the opportunity to select the
 address they wish to use.

Expanded capability for selection and exportation
of extended personnel details or company relationship
details.  The Pathways software allows users to define
custom databases that are to be used to hold data that
is not included as part of the base Pathways system.
Once defined, the software has the capability to
seamlessly integrate the new databases into the
Pathways system.  With the new release, the
software includes expanded capabilities to select
personnel or company relationship information based
on information held in these extended databases.
In effect, the end user will not be able to tell whether
the information comes from fields supplied with
the base Pathways system, or from fields defined
 by the user.

Expanded capability to select companies and information
for exportation based on product specifications.  In
previous releases, users had the ability to select
companies who were associated with particular
products or services.  In the new release, this
capability has been expanded to select companies
based on specific information about those products
or services.  (As an example, a publication might
maintain data about widgets pertaining to their size,
color, and availability domestically and internationally.
In the past, the software only allowed selection based
on whether a company was associated with widgets.
In the new release, users will be able to select
information for those companies that have widgets
 and distribute blue widgets internationally.)

Enhanced post processing for DTP index information.
The current Pathways release will allow users to process
an index file generated by any of the desktop publishers
supported, and post page number information back to
the Pathways databases.  Because of processing
problems that were being encountered with Ventura 8,
these routines have been enhanced to allow multiple
index files to be processed together so that one
combined index can be generated.  This was necessary
because Ventura 8 appeared to be unable to properly
process index files for large publications.  A work around
to the problem was to break the publication into a
number of smaller publications.  However, this caused
a problem in generating one index for the full
publication.  To correct the problem, the Pathways
post processing routines have been enhanced to
allow the user to indicate that multiple indices
are to be processed at the same time and combined
into one index file.  The combined file generated
by the processing can then be passed back to the
DTP software for inclusion in the final publication.

Enhancements to the DTP driver used to generate
markup files for interface to Ventura v8.0.  The new
driver will support generation of markup for tabular
 presentation.  Previously, the Pathways system
supported tabular markup for Ventura v4.2 only.

A new DTP driver has been added to support
generation of markup files for interface to PageMaker.

New utilities will be available to aid users in defining
control information needed by the Pathways CD-ROM
Publisher software.  These new utilities will greatly
reduce the amount of time required by users to
enter the control information used to define
fields of data that are to be selectable and exportable
 by the CD-ROM Publisher software.
