The Pathways Database Publisher puts publishers “in control” by allowing them to customize the
software to meet their unique needs. Throughout the system, options are available that allow publishers
to customize such things as:
Field prompts: Several of the data maintenance screens allow publishers to define customized
prompts that are to be associated with various fields of data. Publishers can change these prompts
to best meet the needs of their data entry staff.
Field Edits: In addition to the standard data edits that are built into the Pathways data maintenance
system, publishers are allowed to define customized edits that are to be enforced for a specific publication.
Control Tables: The Pathways system makes extensive use of Control Tables that are defined by
the publisher. These control tables are used for editing information such as:
The Titles and Areas of Responsibility that can be used to categorize executives.
The Regional Assignments that can be used for companies.
The Business Industry or SIC codes that can be used to categorize companies.
The Relationship Types that can be defined between companies.
The Advertising or Editorial Enhancement Types that can be maintained for companies.
The Products or Services that can be associated with a company.
The Product Specifications information that can be maintained for each product or service.
Miscellaneous Tables that can be used for editing "specifications" associated with a
particular product or service.
Menu Options: Publishers can control the verbiage that is used for various Menu Options. By
doing so, publishers can customize the menus to better meet the needs of their data entry staff.
Graphics/Icons: The Graphical Images and Icons that are used on menu bars can also be customized
by the publisher. Again, this customization is allowed to help publishers customize the system to better
meet the needs of their data entry staff.
Database Access Definition: Although the Pathways system comes with a defined group of indices
for each relational database, publishers may customize the system by defining Additional Access Keys
that they believe will aid their data entry staff.
Product Hierarchy Definition: Publishers are responsible for defining the types of products and
services that can be associated with the companies listed in their directory. Publishers may also define
Product “Groupings” or “Hierarchies”. Using the Pathways system, publishers can easily change these
groupings to meet the changing needs of their readers. With the Pathways system, it is never necessary
to “re-code” products in order to re-align product groupings. Instead, a simple Drag & Drop Facility
is available to help publishers perform this type of re-alignment task.
