The Pathways CD-ROM Publisher software provides publishers a single software system that can be used by them to produce CD-ROM directory products for any or all of their publications. No longer is it necessary for publishers to develop custom written applications for each CD-ROM based product they wish to develop. This flexibility allows publishers to bring new products to market more quickly and cost efficiently than ever before.

When developing CD-ROM based products using the Pathways software, publishers define a set of controls that will be used in the creation of the CD-ROM product.   These controls include the following:

A list of the publications that are to be placed
on the CD-ROM.  Publishers have the option
of placing one or more of their directory products
on a single CD-ROM. Buyers can be restricted
as to which publications they may access, based
on the price they pay for the CD-ROM product.

The name of the graphic file that is to be
displayed when the buyer runs the CD-ROM
based software. This "Splash" screen helps
 further customize each CD-ROM product
 produced by the publisher.

A list of data elements that the buyer will be
allowed to view using the CD-ROM product.
Publishers also control the presentation order
and formatting of all data that can be viewed.
It is possible for publishers to maintain data in
their Pathways databases that is not to be used
 when creating their CD-ROM products.

A list of data elements that can be used for
selection of subsets from the database.
Although data elements may be available for
viewing from the CD-ROM, publishers may
restrict buyers so that only specific elements
can be used for subset selection. As an example,
publishers may allow buyers to view products
produced by companies listed on the CD-ROM.
However, they may choose to restrict buyers
so that they may not select companies based
 on product information.

A list of data elements that can be exported
from the database.  Although data may be
available for viewing from the CD-ROM,
publishers may restrict buyers so that only
specific elements can be used for exportation.
As an example, publishers may allow buyers
to view products produced by companies listed
on the CD-ROM.  However, they may choose
to restrict buyers so that they may not export
 product information related to companies.

The contact information for the publisher's
technical and sales support personnel.  The
buyer of the CD-ROM product will use this
information to contact the publisher's staff with
any questions that may arise about the use of
the CD-ROM product.  Additionally, the software
will use the sales contact information when displaying
messages notifying a buyer that they are trying
to access restricted data or functions. By calling
the sales number displayed, buyers can purchase
additional capabilities or data access.  When this
is done, publishers need only provide the buyer
a new serial number to lift the restriction.  It is
not necessary for the buyer to install any new software.

Editorial information about the CD-ROM product.
The CD-ROM based software includes a help
system and a user tutorial.  Additionally, publishers
may include a PDF file that contains more detailed
information about the data available on a particular
 CD-ROM product.

 When developing CD-ROM products, publishers
may choose to encrypt the databases placed on the
CD-ROM.  Once encrypted, databases placed on
the CD-ROM may not be read by any software
other than that provided on the CD-ROM.
